What Is a 3D Dental Scan and Why Do We Use It?

If you’ve ever had a standard dental X-ray, you know the drill: Bite down on that plastic card, hold still, and the machine takes a flat, two-dimensional picture of your teeth. It’s useful. But it only shows part of the story. That’s where 3D dental scanning comes in. At Gwaltney Dental, we use it to give our patients in Suffolk and Carrollton a level of care that flat X-rays simply can’t match.

A regular X-ray is like looking at a map. It shows you the roads, but you can’t tell if there’s a mountain or a valley in the way. A 3D scan is like having GPS with satellite view. You see everything: the roads, the terrain, the buildings, the traffic. Nothing is hidden.

What Is a 3D Dental Scan and Why Do We Use It? in Suffolk, VA

What Is a 3D Dental Scan?

A 3D dental scan uses a technology called Cone Beam Computed Tomography, or CBCT. That sounds complicated, but the process is actually remarkably simple.

You sit comfortably in a chair. The machine rotates around your head for about 20 to 30 seconds. That’s it. No biting on uncomfortable plastic. No gagging. Just sit still, and we capture hundreds of images from every angle.

Sophisticated software then assembles those images into a single, detailed 3D model of your teeth, jawbone, nerves, sinuses, and even your airway. It’s like having a complete 3D blueprint of your mouth.

Why Do We Use It?

A 3D scan isn’t just a fancy picture. It’s a diagnostic tool that makes treatments safer, more precise, and more predictable.

Here are some of the ways we use it at Gwaltney Dental:

  • Dental Implants: Before placing an implant, we need to know exactly how much bone is there, where the nerves are, and where the sinuses sit. With a 3D scan, Dr. Ryland or Dr. Whitney can plan the implant placement on the computer before they ever touch your mouth. That means less guesswork, less surgery time, and a much better outcome.
  • Root Canals: You know those tiny, branching canals inside a tooth root? A 3D scan shows us their exact shape and location. We can spot extra canals that a flat X-ray might miss. That means we can clean and seal the tooth more thoroughly, reducing the chance of a repeat infection.
  • Wisdom Teeth: If your wisdom teeth are impacted (stuck under the gum), a 3D scan shows exactly how they’re positioned relative to the nerves. That helps us plan a safer extraction.
  • Sleep Apnea and Airway Issues: A 3D scan shows the shape of your airway. That way, we can assess whether your oral structures may be connected to sleep apnea.
  • Invisalign and Orthodontics: A 3D scan lets us see how your teeth are positioned in the bone, helping us plan more effective Invisalign treatment.

Is It Safe?

Yes. The radiation dose from a 3D dental scan is very low, much lower than a medical CT scan. In fact, it’s comparable to a few days of natural background radiation. For most patients, the diagnostic benefits far outweigh any tiny risk.

And unlike those old-fashioned impressions that make you gag, this scan is comfortable and quick. No foam. No goop. And no weird taste.

A Better Experience for You

At Gwaltney Dental, we’re committed to making dental care more comfortable, more accurate, and less stressful. That’s why Dr. Steve, Dr. Ryland, and Dr. Whitney invested in this technology. They wanted to give their patients the best possible care.

If you’ve ever had a treatment that required X-rays, you know how limited they can be. A 3D scan removes that limitation. We see exactly what’s going on, and we plan your care with precision.
