Why You Shouldn’t Ignore a Toothache

You feel it when you sip your morning coffee. A sharp twinge. A dull ache that won’t quite go away. You tell yourself it’s nothing. Maybe you just bit down wrong. Maybe it’ll be fine tomorrow. We get it. Life is busy. Between work, kids, and everything else on your plate, who has time for a toothache? But that little ache is trying to tell you something important. And the sooner you listen, the easier (and cheaper) the fix usually is.

Not all tooth pain is the same. Where you feel it and when you feel it gives us clues about what’s really going on underneath.

Why You Shouldn’t Ignore a Toothache in Suffolk, VA

Sharp Pain When You Bite Down.

This could mean a chip, a loose filling, or even a cavity that’s gotten deep enough to bother the nerve. Sometimes it’s just something stuck between your teeth. But if it keeps happening, don’t wait.

Throbbing Pain That Won’t Stop

This one worries us the most. A steady, pulsing ache often means the nerve inside your tooth is infected or dying. That’s an abscess. And an abscess won’t heal on its own. It needs treatment, usually a root canal, to save the tooth and stop the infection from spreading.

Sensitivity to Hot or Cold

If your tooth hurts for a few seconds when you drink something cold and then stops, that’s often a sign of worn enamel or a small cavity. But if the pain lingers for minutes after, the nerve may be seriously inflamed.

Dull Ache in Your Upper Teeth or Jaw

Believe it or not, this might not be a tooth problem at all. Sinus infections often mimic toothaches. But it could also be bruxism (teeth grinding) or a sign that something is wrong deeper in the tooth.

What Happens When You Wait

We understand the urge to put it off. The dentist isn’t anyone’s favorite way to spend an afternoon. But here’s what we’ve seen happen to patients who waited too long: A small cavity becomes a big one. That big cavity reaches the nerve. Now instead of a simple filling, you need a root canal and a crown.

Or worse, an infected tooth gets ignored until the infection spreads to the bone or your bloodstream. That’s not just painful. That’s dangerous. Some dental infections have landed people in the hospital.

And the longer you wait, the more likely the tooth reaches a point where it can’t be saved at all. Extraction becomes the only option. Then you’re looking at an implant or a bridge to fill that gap. What started as a simple fix turned into something much bigger.

When to Call Us

Here’s our rule of thumb: if you’ve had any tooth pain that lasts more than a day or two, give us a call. Don’t wait until it’s keeping you up at night. Don’t wait until your face starts swelling.

You don’t have to suffer through it. And you definitely don’t have to be nervous about coming in. Our patients tell us all the time that they were scared at first, but our team made them feel cool, calm, and collected.

So here’s what to do: call 757-982-8467. Tell us where it hurts and how long it’s been bothering you. We’ll get you in, figure out what’s going on, and make a plan.
