Nitrous Oxide

Also known as “laughing gas”, nitrous oxide is administered through a face mask or tube. When inhaled, nitrous oxide gas enters the bloodstream quickly, allowing patients to immediately feel relaxed. Nitrous oxide allows patients to remain awake during their treatment. However, they may not remember their procedure. Nitrous oxide also allows patients to feel no pain under our care.

When we remove the mask or tube, patients will feel slightly disoriented or drowsy. However, these effects fade for the majority of patients.

How is nitrous oxide administered?

Nitrous oxide is administered via a nasal mask. This is essentially a mask that covers your entire nose and allows you to breath in the gas during the entire appointment.

Can I drive home after my dentist appointment where nitrous oxide is used?

Yes! The greatest advantage to using this sedation method is the effects will cease immediately once the mask is removed. Some patients may still feel tired and drowsy however this does not happen for most patients. This allows patients to drive themselves to and from their dentist appointments.

Is nitrous oxide safe to use for dentist appointments?

Dentists have been safely administering nitrous oxide to patients for many years. Nitrogen alone is harmful. However, when combined with oxygen, it poses no threats to the patient. A member of our dental staff will be monitoring you during the entire appointment to make sure you are safe.
